Chapter Eleven

I had no explanation as to why, but I started to feel pretty good about the progress we were making on the case. Sure, we still had no idea who killed Marc, but my Spidey senses told me we were getting close.

‘I’ve managed to get some details on Adam’s death,’ Emma said as soon as we sat down to delve into what little paperwork we had. ‘He slipped coming out of the shower. His sister found him the next day.’

She handed me the file, and I flicked through the pages. ‘No evidence of foul play. Death recorded as accidental. Russo mentioned he died of natural causes.’

Emma shrugged. ‘An easy slip to make if you don’t know all the details.’

I nodded. The police and coroner’s report certainly painted a picture of accidental death. The over-bath shower was still running when Adam was found next to the tub, wet and dressed only in a damp towel. I read the report over and over and couldn’t find a thing out of place.

After I placed it to the side, I went through the information we had on Ben’s case. The bodies would be missing for a few days before showing up in country lanes. Besides the fact it had happened fifteen times in the last two months, Ben was right in noting that it seemed the same as any other case of a kid exploring the possibilities of their power. Maybe the school talks were a good idea.

‘I need a coffee,’ I said to Emma, discarding the file. ‘You fancy anything?’

‘I’d love a chai tea,’ she said and returned to sorting through the paperwork while I made my way to the kitchenette.

I was halfway there when my mobile phone rang.

‘Good morning,’ Brandon said, sounding much rested and incredibly chipper considering it was four in the morning, and I’d declined his advances last night.

‘Get much sleep?’ I asked.

‘I did, thank you. I’m fixin’ to grab a coffee from the hotel and then head back to the office. Can I get you one?’

The coffee at work was okay, instant, but okay. The La Colombe offered at the hotel was better, so I said yes and also asked him to pick up a chai tea for Emma. He asked me to stay on the line, and I heard him order and collect the drinks. I perched on the edge of a vacant desk and glanced around the office. It must have been a busy night, as not a single person was around. The TV, as always flashed the news, but I paid little attention to it and instead, stared out the window at the darkness beyond.

‘So, um,’ Brandon said as soon as the background noises suggested he’d left the hotel. ‘I noticed a guard at the elevator door, and I reckon he’s there to keep a watch and make sure I don’t try anything tomorrow?’

I laughed. ‘Do I come across as someone who needs a bodyguard to you?’

‘No, ma’am.’ The sound of his voice betrayed the smile on his face.
